Cheap oil change printer machine9/23/2023 Plus you don't ever have to worry about shady practices at any service center, which can be a big problem. Do you make more than $70/hr? I don't, and neither does 95% of people in the US, at least.ĭefinitely seems like a good idea to spend the $80 and change it yourself. Some quick math: assuming 15 minutes to change the oil, 30 minutes to dispose of the oil, and another 15 minutes of error in estimation, 1 hour of time to save $70 on an oil change. If it's an $80 investment to be able to change your oil at $30 per, whereas jiffy lube and comparable service centers will charge $100 for an expected performance fully synthetic oil change with filter, why wouldn't you do it? So we're up to $30 plus tax (a little more or less depending on your engine, but most don't go above 5 quarts of oil). It's $5 for a filter, and that's a perfectly good filter. If you're changing your oil filter everytime you change the oil, you don't need an expensive one. That's the highest quality oil you're going to find (brands may differ, but extended performance fully synthetic is what you want). What oil and filter are you using and where are you buying them? Walmart has Mobil 1 extended performance for $25/5q. On the other hand, if the OP makes so much money that they lose money by just thinking about paying someone $50 to change the oil in their car, then why would this person be on Reddit asking if doing their own oil changes is worth it? Rather, if it costs less than what your time is worth to have a shop do it, then on cost alone, it makes more sense to pay someone to change it for you.Īlternatively, if a person can't even change batteries in their TV remote then the cost for them to learn to change their own oil, let alone buying the tools that they obviously don't have, is significantly higher than it costs to pay someone to do it for them, while they sit and drink free coffee in a dingy lobby. I wasn't saying that by changing your own oil it's costing you $60. As in, I have to work 300 hours to afford this new iPhone, or I can work 50 hours to afford this new Android it's merely a method to put things in perspective. My mentioning the cost per hour was simply providing a tactic to think about the OP's finances. How would I know what your time is worth? No pulling the drain plug, I just reach under the car and hook up a 3/8" hose between the drain valve and my oil jug. These days, I don't even need to jack up the car since I switched to a Fumoto drain valves. It usually takes me about 10 minutes or less. I'm not aware of any parts shops that don't have an oil dispenser. From there, I usually pay about $30 for oil and filter - I only buy when the oil + filter is on sale together.ĭisposing of the oil is as simple as keeping it in a jug until the next time you go to the parts store to buy oil and filter for the next change. Brakes? Changing a flat? Doing any other car work? But for a minimum, you could get what you need for about $30. It's useful for way more than changing oil. If you wanted a better jack, you could get a simple 2 ton hydraulic jack for about $25. You could use the jack that comes with your car ($0) and a couple of 2 ton jack stands - those run about $8.00.
